UNC Basketball Coach Roy Williams to Retire

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — University of North Carolina men’s basketball Coach Roy Williams, who won three NCAA championships at the school, announced his retirement on Thursday.

According to a UNC news release, Williams, 70, will publicly announce he is leaving the program at a virtual news conference at 4 p.m. Thursday.

Williams, who coached 33 years and won 903 games, led the Tar Heels for 18 seasons, reaching five Final Fours and four NCAA championship games.

Williams, a 1972 UNC graduate who spent many years as an assistant coach under coach Dean Smith, won NCAA titles in 2005, 2009, and 2017 and led the Tar Heels to a 485-163 record. He won nine ACC regular-season titles and three ACC tournament championships.
