Commissioner Mike Causey to present awards, meet with inspectors, economic developers during visit to Cabarrus, Stanly counties

Presenting awards to a Cabarrus County fire department for saving lives and honoring Stanly County volunteers who help senior citizens navigate the Medicare maze will highlight a trip to the Southern Piedmont by Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey on Tuesday, Dec. 8.

Commissioner Causey, who is also the State Fire Marshal, will also meet with building inspectors and economic development leaders while visiting the two counties. The Office of State Fire Marshal oversees building inspectors in North Carolina.

Commissioner Causey will present a SAVE Award to the Concord Fire Department. SAVE Awards are presented to individuals or organizations that go beyond the call of duty to save lives.

On July 16, a couple brought their van to the Concord Fire Department to have their two children’s car seats properly installed. Shortly after having the seats installed, the family became victims of a hit-and-run crash. The children were not injured. The family credits the technicians who installed the car seats in their van for their children escaping the crash unharmed.

Commissioner Causey will also present the Piedmont Region County of the Year Award to the Stanly County Senior Services for their work in helping Medicare beneficiaries save money and navigate the various Medicare programs. Stanly County Senior Services oversees the local Seniors’ Health Insurance Information Program, or SHIIP, in the county.

SHIIP, which is operated by the N.C. Department of Insurance, provides free, objective help to senior citizens across the state. It relies on county coordinators to help organize nearly 1,000 trained volunteers to provide Medicare counseling in all 100 counties in North Carolina.
