Ellenboro man faces false pretense charge


North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey today announced the arrest of Jimmy Dwayne Carranza, 31, of 625 Pilgrim Road, Ellenboro. Carranza was charged with obtaining property by false pretense, a felony.

Special agents with the Department of Insurance’s Criminal Investigations Division accuse Carranza, a licensed insurance agent, of obtaining $14,708.61 in advanced insurance commissions by writing several life insurance policies without the clients’ permission, forging their signatures and providing other false information.

The offense occurred on Aug. 1, 2023.

Following his arrest, Carranza was released by Rutherford County officials under a $5,000 unsecured bond. 

“I encourage everyone to be aware of insurance scams and report suspected scams or insurance fraud immediately by calling 919-807-6840 or toll free from anywhere in North Carolina at 888-680-7684,” Commissioner Causey said.
