The Taliban swept into Kabul on Aug. 15 after President Ashraf Ghani fled the country, bringing an end to a two-decade campaign in which the U.S. and its allies had tried to transform Afghanistan.

The U.S. is working to evacuate thousands of American citizens and Afghan allies amid chaos outside Kabul’s Hamid Karzai International Airport, as the Taliban continues to exert control.
