Raleigh tree service owner charged with false pretense

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey today announced the arrest of Cameron Russell Huffman, 24, of 2725 Webb St., Raleigh. Huffman was charged with obtaining property by false pretense, a felony.

Special agents for the Department of Insurance’s Criminal Investigations Division accuse Huffman, the owner of Oak City Tree Service LLC., of obtaining $20,000 from a customer after advertising that his company had full liability insurance coverage.

According to the arrest warrant, Huffman was unable to produce liability insurance policy information when a claim for damages was filed.

Special agents discovered that Huffman presented false and misleading information to a customer in Wake County saying that his company was fully insured. The customer sustained damage when the landscaping was disturbed from the tree and brush removal and water ran into her house. The customer learned, when attempting to file an insurance claim with Huffman’s insurance company, that the tree service was not insured as advertised.

The offense occurred between July 6 and July 8.

Special agents and Raleigh police arrested Huffman on Sept. 17. He was given a $10,000 unsecured bond.

Consumers may report suspected fraud and scams anonymously. Information is also available at www.ncdoi.gov.
