Lauren Ohnesorge (TBJ), Ashwin Machanavajjhala (Tumult Labs) – GrepBeat

In this week’s episode of The Friday Nooner, journalist Lauren Ohnesorge joined Pete and Joe to talk about everything Triangle Tech. You surely recognize Lauren from her pieces in Triangle Business Journal (TBJ), as well as in their new startup publication, Triangle Inno. The trio talked about local startup game-changers, how TBJ uncovered information on Apple coming to the Triangle, and the importance of safely sharing data.

The featured guest this week is Ashwin Machanavajjhala, president and chief scientist at Tumult Labs. The startup builds privacy technology to enable the effective use of data while respecting the privacy of individuals. Also, fun fact—Tumult Labs was a GrepBeat 2021 Startups to Watch honoree.

Here are some highlights from the episode:

  • Joe and Pete start off the show by emphasizing the cold temperature outside; Pete had to wear tights (or so he said) when he went for his morning run. They also discussed whether we considered Joe to be Pete’s Friday Nooner sidekick, and the new overhead lights in the conference rooms at Colopy Ventures World HQ.
  • Lauren joined the stream from her new desk at home. She talked briefly about TBJ’s Triangle Inno, and how they’ve been investigating who “the real game-changers” are in the Triangle startup space. Lauren also discussed her recent Apple story about the tech giant’s search for a construction manager on their new RTP campus, as well as TBJ’s process for uncovering information on Apple coming to the Triangle.
  • Ashwin, who is also a professor at Duke, entered next. Tumult Labs helps organizations, such as the US Census Bureau, tell if they are helping society or breaching the privacy of individuals. With the use of Tumult’s privacy technology, organizations can safely collect and share data for research, policymaking, financial decisions, advertising, and many other use cases. Ashwin also discussed how involved Duke University is with the startup; the company’s traction in the government space; and the importance of sharing data safely.
