North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey today announced the arrest of Samuel Stacy Whitlock-Macrae, 52, of 105 Perriwinkle Place, Durham. Whitlock-Macrae was charged with insurance fraud, a felony.

Special agents with the Department of Insurance’s Criminal Investigations Division accuse Whitlock-Macrae of providing false information in an automobile accident claim with Progressive Insurance.

According to the arrest warrant, Whitlock-Macrae told the insurance company that the accident occurred on Sept. 22, 2021. However, the accident occurred on Sept. 24, 2021, at a time when the policy had lapsed and he was not insured.

The offenses occurred between Sept. 28, 2021, and Sept. 30, 2021.

Raleigh police arrested Whitlock-Macrae on Jan. 14 on an unrelated charge. He was then served the insurance fraud arrest warrant and released on a $3,000 secured bond on Jan. 15.

Commissioner Causey encourages North Carolinians to help keep insurance premiums low by reporting suspicious fraud.

“Insurance fraud is not a victimless crime,” Commissioner Causey said. “It hits all of us in the pocket through higher premiums.”

If you suspect insurance fraud or other white-collar crimes, please report it. You may anonymously report fraud by calling the N.C. Department of Insurance Criminal Investigations Division at 919-807-6840. Information is also available at www.ncdoi.gov.
