Hertford County Woman Accused of Insurance Fraud

Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey today announced the arrest of Evon Melissa Mabine, 39, of 506 Ahoskie Cofield Road, Ahoskie; she is charged with one count each of insurance fraud and obtaining property by false pretense.

Department of Insurance criminal investigators accuse Mabine of intentionally setting fire to her vehicle and fraudulently claiming the fire was due to mechanical failures with National General Insurance Company. Investigators allege Mabine received a rental car which cost the company $900.00.

Mabine was arrested on March 14 in Hertford County and released under a promise to appear in court.

An estimated 10 cents of every dollar paid in premiums goes toward the payment of fraudulent claims. The Department of Insurance employs 20 sworn state law enforcement officers dedicated to investigating and prosecuting claims of insurance and bail bonding fraud. To report suspected fraud, contact the Department of Insurance Criminal Investigations Division at 919-807-6840. Callers may remain anonymous.
