New Hanover County man charged with insurance fraud

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey today announced the arrest of Juan Terence Thompson, 34, of 13 South 12th Street, Wilmington, NC. Thompson was charged with one count of insurance fraud, a felony.

Special agents with the Department of Insurance’s Criminal Investigations Division accuse Thompson of claiming a car accident occurred later than it did on July 2. Thompson obtained an insurance policy following the accident, but told the company the accident happened after he had a policy.

Following the investigation, warrants were issued on Nov. 7. Thompson later turned himself in and was released on a $1,000 bond.

“Insurance fraud hits consumers in the wallet,” Commissioner Causey said. “Approximately 20 cents of every insurance premium dollar go to covering the cost of fraud. I’m fighting this by aggressively pursuing and prosecuting insurance fraud in North Carolina.”

If you suspect insurance fraud or other white-collar crimes, please report it. You may anonymously report fraud by calling the N.C. Department of Insurance Criminal Investigations Division at 919-807-6840 or toll free from anywhere in North Carolina at 888-680-7684.
