Newly reelected North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey has detailed priorities for his next term in office. Among the most crucial, Commissioner Causey plans to work with the N.C. General Assembly to address statutory changes needed to better protect consumers and lessen liabilities for insurance agents. As State Fire Marshal, he will address state laws that will help protect firefighters, first responders and their families.
“I am grateful to have another four years to further tackle issues I have found to have hindered consumers, policyholders, agents and the fire service during my first term,” said Commissioner Causey. “I will continue to work with my team and the legislature to meet the insurance needs of North Carolinians, especially during states of emergencies, such as hurricanes, and most recently, the COVID-19 pandemic.”
In order to mitigate flood damage he witnessed during the recent hurricanes, the Commissioner will continue to urge insurance companies to write policies for the state’s new private flood insurance plan he approved earlier this year. He also plans to review and work with the General Assembly to modernize many of the statutes to improve the state’s insurance industry while encouraging additional companies to conduct business in North Carolina to create competition and lessen costs.
Next term, Commissioner Causey will continue to address the cost of distracted driving, both on automobile insurance policies and highway safety. Fraud remains a top priority and Commissioner Causey will expand efforts to strengthen fraud investigations with the desire of holding down insurance premiums.
As State Fire Marshal, Commissioner Causey has traveled the state visiting fire departments in all 100 counties to determine how best to provide the tools needed so firefighters can protect their communities. He says in the upcoming term, he will work with legislators to increase funding for fire grants and the firefighters’ pension fund and will support all legislation for the health and well-being of our first responders.
Commissioner Causey’s second term begins Jan. 1, 2021.
